The Mickleham Road Upgrade: Bringing Benefits to Woodsong
Stage 1: Somerton Road to Dellamore Boulevard (Completed late 2024)
Stage 1 delivered nearly 10 km of additional lanes on Mickleham and Somerton Roads, providing two lanes in each direction. Key intersections at Somerton, Hillview Road, Greenvale Gardens Boulevard, and Dellamore Boulevard were upgraded with traffic signals or slip lane improvements, and priority bus lanes were introduced where needed. These upgrades significantly reduced congestion and improved safety for approximately 25,000 motorists daily; all major works were completed six months ahead of schedule. Shared walking and cycling paths also enhanced active transport connectivity throughout the corridor.]
Stage 2: Dellamore Boulevard to Craigieburn Road (Planning underway, with $250M committed in April 2025)
When delivered, Stage 2 will expand Mickleham Road to three lanes in each direction and introduce new signalised intersections at Dunhelen Lane and Cookes Road, along with extended shared walking and cycling paths. These works will build upon the benefits of Stage 1 and the adjacent Craigieburn Road Upgrade to support safer, more efficient travel across the region.

What It Means for Woodsong Residents
Faster Commutes to Greenvale and Craigieburn
Stage 1 has already delivered smoother traffic flow and safer intersections for residents travelling southwest toward Greenvale. Once Stage 2 is implemented, enhanced capacity and new signalised intersections will further streamline journeys toward key activity hubs.
Enhanced Active Transport Connectivity
Stage 1’s shared-use pathways now support safer walking and cycling routes. With Stage 2 planning to extend these paths further, Woodsong residents will enjoy seamless active transport connections, including access to Craigieburn train station and local schools.
Regional Integration: City and Airport Access
- Melbourne CBD is approximately 30 km south, equating to around 40 minutes’ drive.
- Craigieburn train station provides around 45 minutes rail access to the city via the Craigieburn line.
- Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) lies roughly 15 km south of Woodsong, about a 15-minute drive.
The ongoing road upgrades, and future Melbourne transport initiatives, are reinforcing Woodsong’s reliable access to major metropolitan and regional destinations.
Convenient Access: Five Entry and Exit Points
The eastern side of Woodsong precinct features five distinct access points, enabling efficient travel toward Craigieburn, and beyond. Whether running errands, accessing local schools, or commuting, residents benefit from flexibility and reduced travel time.
Woodsong will complete their signalised intersection with Mickleham Road in 2026, which will provide access to the western precinct of Woodsong.
